The Best Nude Lipstick for a True Winter
The concept of “nude lipstick” has a firm grip on makeup culture, and women are told that their makeup wardrobe is not complete without one. “Nude lipsticks” are usually flesh-toned products in the beige, chestnut, mauve, and peach categories. They are generally muted (not vibrant), and are intended to look similar to either the natural color of lips or facial skin.
Nude lips like the ones pictured above are unwearable for a True Winter
Muted, softened peach tones can look good on a select few women, but they are far from universally flattering. One of the seasons that suffers the most from this makeup trend is True Winter.
True Winters require intense, vivid color to bring them to life. The design and saturation of their own features is enhanced by the addition of saturated tones like cobalt, fuchsia, citron, emerald, and jet black. When it comes to makeup, their best and most flattering tones for cheeks and lips include ruby, cherry, fuchsia, magenta, and cool hot pink. Some of their worst, least flattering tones include desaturated pinks, mauves, peaches, and browns. This leaves some True Winter women deflated, unsure of what lipsticks are best for a natural look.
The solution is a tinted lip balm rendered in a True Winter’s same flattering tones—this type of formulation deposits a sheer, watercolor wash of color that reads as subtle, natural, and perfecting.
My favorite tinted lip balm for True Winters is the Nivea Lip Care Tinted Balm in the shade “Cherry.” This product is available for $6 on Amazon or in a 4-pack for $14.
Below is one of my beautiful True Winter clients. In the first photo, she is wearing no makeup (yes, I’m jealous of her skin too!) In the second photo, she is wearing only a light layer of foundation, blush, and the Nivea Lip Care Tinted Balm in Cherry.
Even something as natural as the simple makeup above contributes to an elegant, polished look. You can see that the lip look she is sporting is not focus-pulling or dramatic in any way, but it harmonizes beautifully with her coloring. If she wanted to wear intense or colorful eye makeup, this would be the lip of choice.
Do not give in to the notion that the only natural lip option is the Kardashian beige, or the mauvey rose. If you fall in the True Winter palette, you will never look as lively, present, or beautiful in those lipsticks as you truly are.
A True Winter doesn’t need to choose between looking beautiful and looking natural. She can have both at the same time. A True Winter is capable of wearing dramatic, brilliantly bright lipstick, but they look equally gorgeous in their perfectly subtle, natural look.
